How to get white teeth

A white smile leads to positive first impressions

Let’s face it, everyone wants a nice white smile and good oral health. Yellow and stained teeth are associated with poor oral hygiene and routine and can damage the impression you give other people. The reason is simple – people think you are not taking your personal hygiene and appearance seriously, so why would they take you seriously? The good news is that your smile can be improved by using an effective teeth whitening product, but first, we need to understand the causes of tooth discoloration.

Food and beverage stains your teeth

Strong color pigments found in certain food and drinks can quickly stain your teeth and make them look yellow. Coffee, berries, beer, soda, tea, spicy dishes, and wine are the worst offenders since they contain strong color pigments and tannins that go under your enamel and stain from both the inner and outer parts of your tooth.

This does not mean that you should totally avoid consumption of them, but should limit the intake and the time these substances are in contact with your teeth. A practical tip is to rinse your mouth with water after consumption and/ or brush your teeth 30 minutes after consuming food and drinks that are known to stain teeth.

Nicotine stains can quickly discolor your teeth and make them look very yellow.  Even if you smoke irregularly, tobacco can still stain your teeth. In addition to staining, cigarettes restrict blood flow in your gum and cause damage to your mouth. This damage can result in tooth loss, cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.

Our mouths are a natural breeding ground for different types of bacteria, both good and bad ones. As the oral environment come in contact with food, saliva, drinks, etc., it starts building up a plaque to your teeth that attack gums and enamel. Plaque can be both yellow and white looking, but if left can turn brownish. It both looks bad and is also not good for your teeth as it grows bacteria over time if left untreated. This can weaken your enamel, lead to cavities, and eventually tooth loss.

Plaque builds up naturally but can be stopped from forming by following a regular oral hygiene routine using a combination of daily flossing, brushing, and rinsing.

Natural Aging

As we age, a natural discoloration of teeth occurs. This means that even though you brush, floss, rinse, whiten and avoid regular consumption of staining food and drinks, your teeth will over time gradually discolor.

So how do we get with teeth?

A daily oral hygiene routine with brushing, flossing, and rinsing is one of the best ways to keep your teeth white. We recommend you do this twice a day to limit the build-up of plaque and keep the surface of your enamel clean.

In addition to a daily cleansing routine, there are various other ways to improve the appearance of your teeth:

  • Use whitening toothpaste: contain various ingredients that can remove stains.
  • Use mouthwash: is great for reducing plaque build-up and bacteria. It can improve the appearance of your teeth and give you better breath.
  • Brush your tongue: you should clean your tongue as often as you clean your teeth.
  • Go for regular dental check-ups: see a dentist every six months that can remove tartar and clean gum and enamel.
