Are teeth whitening kits safe?

The demand for teeth whitening treatments have dramatically increased over the last couple of years and as a result teeth whitening kits have turned into an affordable and convenient solution for those who seek to improve their smiles. Most teeth whitening kits cost £20 – £80 in the UK and the more expensive kits have stronger gel, better quality ingredients, are safe to use, and are approved by UK dentists. At-home teeth whitening kits are much cheaper than visiting a dentist and are more convenient with the added benefit of allowing you to whiten your teeth from the comfort of your home when it suits you.

Generally, teeth whitening kits are safe to use if you follow the usage recommendations and buy the kit from a credible brand.  However, this does not mean that all whitening kits are effective at generating promised results and contain ingredients that have been subject to clinical trials to prove their abilities to whitening teeth. Thus, it’s important to confirm that the teeth whitening kit has been approved by UK dentists and that it will effectively whiten your teeth before you start the treatment. If you are unsure about a product and its credentials, consult your dentist.

Most teeth whitening kits contain hydrogen peroxide, which is an active bleaching agent with oxidising properties designed to remove surface stains from the teeth. In the UK, at home whitening kits containing hydrogen peroxide are allowed only if they contain less than 0.1% peroxide. This relatively low level of hydrogen peroxide makes it safe to use, but it means you must spend a lot more time and many more treatments to get the desired whitening results from using the product.

Other teeth whitening kits may use natural ingredients to whiten your teeth such as activated charcoal, sodium bicarbonate, coconut oil, sodium perborate etc. Whilst safe to use, the problem is that none of these natural ingredients are truly effective at whitening your teeth and are mainly aimed at removing surface stains.

It’s important to note that some teeth whitening kits sold online contain dangerously high levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can cause significant risk to your oral health. Very high levels of hydrogen peroxide means that you are potentially exposed to causing damage to the tooth enamel and gum by overusing the product. Research shows that highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide causes enamel softening, surface roughness, and an increase in the susceptibility of the tooth to demineralization, based upon in vitro findings.

In summary, shy away from non-professional brands who sell products that are not manufactured in Europe and whose products have not been approved by the EU and UK regulator for use at home. This should clearly be indicated on the packaging and on the website and will minimise the chances of you buying a product that is not safe for home usage. If you are new to teeth whitening and concerned about the risks of whitening your teeth, it’s best to speak to your dentist first.

Are there side effects to teeth whitening?

While teeth whitening is considered safe, if the product you use contain hydrogen-peroxide you may experience some side effects from treatments:

Tooth sensitivity: Your teeth may become more sensitive following teeth whitening treatment.

Irritated gums: You may experience irritation to your gums. This can happen if the gel comes in contact with your gum.

If you want to avoid these side effects, make sure to buy a whitening kit that does not use hydrogen-peroxide as active bleaching agent. An example could be a whitening gel using Phthalimido-Peroxy-Caproic acid (PAP) as active bleaching agent, which is a non-invasive tooth whitening agent that causes no sensitive or damage to enamel health.

Certain bleaching agents can cause tooth sensitivity

Important points to remember before you whiten your teeth

When using teeth whitening kits, it is important to remember the following points:

Follow the usage instructions: Closely follow the instructions on the label to ensure you not use the whitening gel for longer than necessary (typically 20-30 minutes). Prolonged use will not make your teeth whiter but can cause irritation. Also keep in mind that teeth whitening kits are for natural teeth, not implants, crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Do not whiten to often: You should not whiten your teeth on a permanent basis and let it go a few weeks to months between treatments. Instead use whitening kits as a top-up solution every so often to get rid of extrinsic discoloration caused by food and beverage consumption.

Avoid staining food and drinks: Once you have whitened your teeth, avoid food and drinks that can re-stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, red wine, spicy food etc.

Check where the product is made: Never buy a product that is not manufactured in the UK or in Europe. The EU Council Directive have much stricter rules for product safety and ingredient requirements.

Consult your dentist: If you are worried about teeth whitening kits or unsure which one you should use, always consult your dentist first. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the best teeth whitening solution for your teeth.
